“ When thinking of German food, to me, this is exactly what springs to mind, thankfully my party had made a reservation. The decor is very old fashioned but adds to the restaurant's charm, almost as if it knows it doesn't need to change with the times. The food was perfect, I had potato soup, and schnitzel, I also got to try some of the potatoes cooked in bacon, and some of the goulash, and I had a wheat beer to drink. The potato soup was by far the best I have ever had, my friends had some of the other soups and they all said it was equally good. The size of the schnitzel was unexpected! Well worth the money. Only improvement could be settling the bill for large groups, however on hindsight one of us should have paid, and then sorted it later, rather than trying to split the bill at the restaurant. ”

“ Authentic coastal German food that lived up to the high reviews. They had the typical Hamburg classics of Pannfisch and Labskaus, but what attracted me were the pickled herring options. There were several types to choose from, both German and Dutch varieties, or you can get a sampler plate with all three plus some tiny shrimps. I got a tomato soup and split the herring sampler with my dad, and had room for dessert. There was a good variety of wine options by the glass, I went with the Riesling which balanced the fishy dish quite well. Appetizer was a tomato soup with cream that was quite good. For dessert, the Hamburg specialty Rote Grutze - homemade red currant jam with a delightful cream sauce. Service was very friendly, and they had English menus available. The interior was decorated much like typical old-style Hamburg restaurants. I believe there was a patio that overlooked the Alster Pond, but was closed due to rain. Don't miss a chance to try Hamburg classic dishes done right! ”
